On Mrs Tea’s first day, back on the 29th
November I was there as soon as I could be (…unfortunately this was at 5, after
I finished work but I was there to celebrate with her!
Entering the tea room is like going back in
time. The Mrs Tea herself, in costume behind the counter, with perfect forties
hair and red lips, the music floating out of the ‘gramophone’ (well, a cd
player that looks like a gramophone) and the war-time posters that cover the
walls all draw you in and you can relax in retro heaven. Behind the counter are
two shelving units full of teapots of all different shapes and sizes and the
counter itself is covered with the most delicious home-made cakes, mince pies
and scones. The blackboards behind the counter list the gorgeous foods on offer
including an ‘Evacuee’s menu’ for kids.
I love the atmosphere in this gorgeous theme café,
which is perfect to the last detail and includes sweet things like ration book leaflets on
the tables and as loyalty cards. Unfortunately Mrs Tea’s café is now closed but
she is still running pop-up tearooms for all occasions. So if your party is in
need of some traditional tearoom tea and cake and an extra friendly face (which
all parties are) you can contact her with the details below, I know I will!
